Just over 5 years ago, I fell feet-first down 4 flights of concrete stairs. When I stopped at the bottom, my arm came to a rest against the side of my face – from the back forward – my rotator cuff and every muscle, ligament and connective tissue in my shoulder was torn.
The doctors, of course, put me in a sling that hugged my injured wing into my chest (I even had to sleep with it on) and warned me that any and every movement would cause further damage – micro tears, they called them. I was forbidden to go back onto the mat and told I could only do exercises prescribed by my physical therapist. Needless to say, rather than healing my shoulder and regaining strength in my right arm, it atrophied.
Eventually I eased back onto my mat anyway, but unfortunately I didn’t connect with an instructor who knew how to work with my particular “condition” and it was re-injured…I’ve continued to practice off and on anyway as I felt brave enough, but I was always very afraid to do any asana’s that involved shoulder mobility or, heaven forbid, weight bearing!
And then I took the Anusara yoga therapeutics workshop with Isvari at the Kashi Atlanta Ashram. It was through this intensive that I made real, discernable progress and have a fresh outlook on life and my yoga practice. Honestly.
Using the techniques that she’s taught me over the past three weeks, I’ve already regained an enormous amount of mobility and range in my shoulder – I even pulled off the dreaded Vashistasana last night – PAIN FREE! This may not sound like much of an accomplishment to many, but for me it’s HUGE!
It is my wish to continue to practice with and learn from Isvari, to whom I owe many thanks and much gratitude!
